"This bitch is serious.” The younger one was nearly done with talking. He was itching to kill her.

The older one turned to his companion. “You need to settle down–”

Neagley stepped up and punched him in the mouth. It was a straight right, thrown hard and efficiently. She heard something crack under her fist and the man staggered back. His buddy grabbed at the gun in his shoulder holster.

Neagley already had the 9mm out and she clubbed him on the top of the head with it, then swung it sideways, catching the barrel on the man’s jaw. Another cracking sound and he went down onto the ground.

She stepped up to the man bleeding from the mouth who was too stunned to go for his gun. Neagley jammed her 9mm into the underside of his chin.

“Talk.”

“Blade sent us,” he said. “Said to kill him before he could talk to anyone.”

Neagley heard movement to her right, saw the young guy on the ground struggling to line up a shot at her.

She lashed out a foot and caught the gun on the side, it swung over, fired, and the older man fell to the ground. The bullet intended for Neagley had hit him in the chest instead.

“Congratulations,” Neagley said as she wrenched the gun from the younger man’s grasp. “You did get to kill a second person today.”

He looked confused. She raised her 9mm and shot him twice in the head.

“That was for Powers,” she said. Neagley dragged the bodies to the SUV and with great effort, loaded them into the back. She then steered the SUV to a steep curve, parked, put the vehicle in neutral and let it roll off the highway and down the embankment.

The two men only had one cell phone between them, and it was password protected. She dropped it to the ground and stomped on it, smashing it to pieces.

She walked back to the BMW. In the glove compartment, she had several brand-new burner phones still in their plastic packages. She opened one up, fired it up and made an anonymous call to the local police. She’d heard gunshots near someone’s house and she gave them Roger Powers’ address.

As soon as she was done with the call, she destroyed the phone and its SIM card and threw it into the brush and then she drove away.

Once she was on the freeway, she wondered who in the hell Blade was.

Neagley also thought about the text message Powers had sent her, probably hours before the killers had arrived. It had confused her and she was hoping to talk to him about it, to see what he’d meant by it.

It had said: Do you know Michael Tallon and Lauren Pauling?

Neagley realized she did know of Lauren Pauling, that she was a private investigator and former FBI agent with a history with Jack Reacher. She lived in New York.

Neagley rerouted her map.

She wasn’t going home to Chicago.

She was going to New York.
